Kenya  

Very active section with an organisation regrouping all the building industry professionals. The Kenya Institute of Architects belongs to this organisation as a Chapter and has 530 members. The same organisation is trying to revive the East African Institute of Architects to regroup Tanzania, Uganda and eventually Burundi and Rwanda. Kenya

Madagascar  

In contact with G Liounis. Organisation being formed and new registration law has been passed by decree not in application since the past 10 years. UIA dossier sent on 15 May 03.

Mauritius  

125 architects. No schools of architecture. Architects trained in Europe, South Africa, Australia and India. Legally recognised since by the Professional Architects Council Act.

Uganda  

Services procurement proposed by World Bank and other donor agencies favours foreign architects in a country that is just starting to receive foreign direct investment.
Will host the next meeting of the East African Institute of Architects in Kampala in Dec 03.

Seychelles  

About 10 architects. Although the profession is still not legally protected there is a number of protectionist laws controlling the practise of foreign architects. The government is very concerned with the preservation of the natural environment and the local cultural identity.

Sudan  

1500 strong organisation with a great number of them practising in the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. The SIA has suffered a long time from politics and ceased to exist during 10 years. Their activities only restarted 3 years ago. With the collaboration of engineers they are creating a Council of architects and engineers. This new organisation will control the building industry in the country. The existing laws for the profession is under revision.

Tanzania  

Strong competition from UK and Italian architects in spite of local registration laws. In Tanzania at long last the CPD programme has been organised by the Architects and Quantity Surveyors Registration Board. Assistance will be required to get the CPD validated.
The Architects Association of Tanzania in association with the Registration Board is drawing the Building Act and assisting in the revising of the Procurement Act for Services
