BUJUMBURA, 17 May 03 (ABP) - Mr René
Claude Ngendahayo, President of the future Ordre des architectes du Burundi.
“ The main problem of the profession is its non-recognition, and anyone
can call himself an architect ”. The Act for the creation of the Order
and the protection of the title has been waiting for the last two years.
The 50 local architects work for the five different categories of buildings
• Functional simple buildings (warehouses, stores and cemeteries)
• Small buildings (houses, prisons, small hotels, garages, sports
fields)
• Larger buildings (private villas, residential complex, administrative
buildings, banks)
• Artistic category (Interior decoration, exhibition stalls, public
gardens)
• Restoration of buildings and historical monuments.

The Société des Architectes du
Congo – SAC – exists since1959 and since 1974 the bill is waiting
for enactment. The school of architecture has developed several exchange
programme with other institutions since its creation in 1967.
The SAC is a non-profit organisation with Congolese architects as well as
foreign architects who have chosen Congo as a second home.
Since 1998 the government is having a closer look to future architects’
law.
